Services for Carers
ALARA is a registered provider of the Older Carer Initiative, a program which is funded through the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services.
This initiative aims to assist older carers to sustain their caring role and plan for the future support of their family member with a disability. The program also provides funding for flexible respite support with the aim of strengthening the ability of families to care for their family member with a disability and enabling the family to stay together longer.
Eligibility
To receive support older carers must be:
- 65 years and over, or if Indigenous aged 50 years, and over providing care to a family member
- living with the person receiving their care and
- being an unpaid carer, apart from receiving the Carer Allowance
To be eligible the person with a disability must meet the criteria outlined in the Disability Services Eligibility Policy.
How is Support Provided?
The Older Carer Initiative takes a strategic approach to the provision of respite services to older carers by not only providing respite, but also assisting older carers to plan and prepare for the time when they can no longer continue in the caring role.
